Are You an Optimist or a Pessimist? How Your Thoughts Shape Your Mental Health
By Peter E. Lawson, MA, LPC

As a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 20 years of experience, I’ve seen how the way we think profoundly affects how we feel and live. Our thoughts create the lens through which we experience the world — shaping our mood, our relationships, and even our physical health.

Understanding the Power of Your Thoughts
Each thought carries emotional energy. When we repeatedly tell ourselves negative stories — “I’ll never get it right” or “things always go wrong” — those beliefs can fuel anxiety, depression, and frustration. But when we learn to identify and challenge those thought patterns, we open space for balance, growth, and resilience.

Why “Think Positive” Isn’t Enough
It’s not about forcing positivity — it’s about realistic optimism. Through evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and solution-focused techniques, we can learn to reframe our thoughts, build emotional awareness, and move toward healthier mental habits.

Developing a More Balanced Mindset

  • Notice your self-talk. Become aware of harsh or catastrophic thinking.

  • Challenge assumptions. Ask whether your thoughts are facts or fears.

  • Practice compassion. Treat yourself with the same empathy you offer others.

  • Seek support. Therapy provides tools to break unhelpful cycles and build confidence.
